The Hawaiian islands were once home to 142 endemic bird species – birds found nowhere else on earth. Since the arrival of humans, 95 of these species are known to be extinct and 31 of the remaining birds are endangered. In this half hour BirdNote podcast – the first in a series about Hawaiian birds – we travel to Hawai‘i to meet a unique group of birds called honeycreepers. There were once over 55 species of honeycreepers, but over half of them have gone extinct. One of them, the Palila, is still holding on. What do we need to do to protect it?
