Nuthatches – those intrepid little balls of energy that travel up and down and basically all around a tree are great birds to have nesting in your yard. They prefer dead trees where they excavate their own nesting holes, so keeping dead trees in the ground when safe and feasible is a life-saver for birds like this. If you live in an area where these nuthatches are in the spring and summer, a nestbox could be a very welcome addition to your backyardRed-breasted Nuthatches are declining in some areas, so help out a nuthatch pair and put up a house just for them well before their season starts in April! For the plans and more info check out their page on Nestwatch.
