Rollers are dazzling birds, famous for their sky-high acrobatics—rolling and tumbling through the air in spectacular breeding flight displays. Found across Europe, Africa, and Asia, much about their full life cycle has remained a mystery, especially their migration routes. That changed this year with “Rory,” a European Roller satellite-tagged by BirdLife South Africa in Limpopo. Just 85 days later, Rory turned up in China—nearly 10,000 miles away! Even more remarkably, he wasted no time, pairing up and breeding at what’s believed to be his own hatching site.
