Sturnella magna

With a bright yellow breast and a beautiful song, this bird is well known in North America. Meadowlarks are polygamous which means there is often more than one female who breeds with the male. They build their nest on the ground of woven grass with a little path leading up to it in prairies and hay fields in May and June. Meadowlarks have been considered fairly common, but this may be changing rapidly as prairies are being taken for human development and they are losing a place to live. Since they nest in hay fields as well, if the hay fields are plowed or mowed while they have eggs or chicks in the nest this is disastrous. If you live near prairies where meadowlarks live, you can help this beautiful bird keep his home by helping volunteer groups who do prairie restoration.
