The woodchuck den is a lot like your home—it has separate rooms for sleeping and storing food, and this one has a back door for a quick escape from a predator! Woodchucks are true hibernators, which means that they can slow down their body systems and enter deep sleep to get through the tough winter months. During the summer and fall they eat as much as they can, storing the extra as body fat which they use to live on during their hibernation. Woodchucks are secretive, but they have learned to live near humans. If a woodchuck is bothering your garden try building a fence around it, or if this doesn’t work, you can trap the woodchuck and move him to a more wild area.
