Many people consider the colorful Wood Duck to be the most beautiful waterfowl species in North America. It is one of the only ducks in North America that nests in trees. Their nests can be very high up and are not always over water. So the chicks, like this little duckling,  will jump out and free-fall either into the water or make a harder landing on the ground when their mother calls to them to leave the nest.
