Hylocichla mustelina
Description
The beautiful song of the Wood Thrush is a haunting reminder of the deep forest where they live in the East and Midwest US. Although still common, this species has declined over 40 percent since 1966. Acid rain is a suspected culprit, but cowbirds which parasite their nests have had a big impact. Plus, the deep forest habitat of the Wood Thrush is also in danger from deforestation - especially in the Central American countries in which they overwinter. Check the forest floor for sightings of the Wood Thrush who may be checking under leaves for something to eat.
