The most endangered of the great apes, these shy and peaceful animals live in the Central and Western African lowlands. They are very intelligent, and those in captivity have learned human sign language to communicate with their human keepers. This young gorilla probably spent the first two years of his life traveling on his mom's back, and will spend the next several years growing up in his troop, learning how to interact with the rest of his group, and learning to do what he needs to do in the wild - like build night nests to sleep in. Gorillas are losing their homelands to humans at an alarming rate and are also targeted for the bushmeat trade. Their lives are further complicated as some of the areas they inhabit are experiencing ongoing fighting and civil unrest.
