Yellow-Headed Blackbird
Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus

Description
From Central Canada though the Western US to Mexico, these flashy yellow headed birds with the broken hinge call can be found in marshy areas and wetlands. Each spring the males hold court on the reeds over the wetlands and try to find as many "wives" as their territory can support. Some Yellow-Headed Blackbirds have had as many as 6 mates in the same season! The females build their nests of wet materials on the reeds which, as they dry, tighten around the reeds making for a safe and stable nest.
