Alouatta
Description
The unforgettable calls of Howler Monkeys are well known in the jungles of Central and South America. Often heard at dawn and dusk, this throaty howl is mistaken by first time listeners for a jaguar. Males let each other know whose territory it is with this great sound. Troops of howlers can be seen during the day eating in the tops of trees - the babies clinging to their mothers or hanging upside down with their prehensile tails to reach that last piece of fruit. Howler monkeys are the largest New World Monkey, and while some species are not in trouble, as the rainforest gives way to human settlement, the monkeys lose their homes and humans eat them. As a result, many species of howlers are in serious trouble.
