Hirundo rustica
Description
This lovely little swallow can be found all throughout North and South America as well as Eurasia and parts of North Africa. This is one bird who has benefited from human occupation, as they love nesting in the eaves of buildings. Barn Swallows can be seen racing low across the sky and open water catching insects in flight. With little prodding, they will nest in the eaves of your house using mud and grass to form a nest which they cement to the side of the wall. But, you can encourage them to nest with pre-fab barn swallow nests to which they take readily and will outfit appropriately for their families.
