White-handed Gibbon
Hylobates lar

Description
Living in family groups of a male, female and their offspring, Lar Gibbons are a picture of family unity. The males defend their home territory from other males, and the females from other females. Once mated, the pair will stay together their entire lives, and they can live over 40 years. Gibbons are not monkeys, but are the smallest of the great apes. Lar gibbons live in the forests of southeast Asia and they are being threatened by logging for hardwoods which is taking away their homes, as well as their capture for the pet trade and for human consumption.
