Actias luna
Description
This beautiful large moth can be found in North America in deciduous forests. They are considered part of the wild silk moth family and with wingspans over 4 inches, they are very strong fliers. Luna moths are active at night and both mating and egg laying take place after midnight. The caterpillars that hatch stay on the leaves where they eat and when the moths are adults they do not eat, but mate and reproduce. In some areas their numbers are declining due to habitat destruction and the use of bright lights to which they are attracted, and which disrupts mating.
