Originally there were three different species of cows but one of them is now extinct. Domesticated for thousands of years, the ancient Egyptians worshiped the Apis bull, and cows are still considered sacred in India. Cows live in herds led by one male. Each female in the herd has a special status and her calves inherit the same status that she has. Left to themselves, cows can live up to 20 years.
