This owl with a heart shaped face makes an unmistakable blood curdling screech. They are found on all continents except Antarctica. Like most owls, all 46 kinds of barn owl hunt at night having excellent vision in low light. But they are renown for their excellent hearing and can find prey (mostly rodents) which are completely hidden - just by listening for them. Barn Owl populations have been declining for several decades in some areas and there are a number of conservation efforts. If you are in a area that has declining numbers of barn owls, you can help by putting up nest boxes and participating in counts.
