Anas acuta
Description
One of the dabbling ducks, this slender and graceful duck is found throughout North America and Eurasia and breeds in northern areas. They are recognizable by the male's long thin tail. Although they are not endangered, their numbers are declining as Pintails are one of the first nesting ducks of the season. Since they nest in open fields, their nests are often destroyed when fields are plowed and seeded early. When row crops are planted in the fall instead of the spring, and grasslands are maintained in pintail habitat, this gives them an undisturbed nesting area and helps their populations.
