Alex is an African Grey parrot who was part of a ground-breaking 30 year study in bird intelligence led by Dr. Irene Pepperberg. Alex could not only speak English but was very much aware of what he was saying. He could identify over 50 objects, several colors and shapes, add, identify numbers and quantities, knew nearly 100 words and could use them appropriately to communicate. Most recently he taught himself the concept of "none." In their work together Dr. Pepperberg and Alex made the discovery that birds possess the emotional equivalent of a 2 year old human child and the intellectual equivalent of a 5-6 year old human child. Alex passed on September 6, 2007, but his legacy is being taken up by Grif and Wart (aka Arthur), two young African Greys that work with Dr. Pepperberg. The Alex Foundation - the non-profit research project that bears his name and continues the research - will receive $19 from the sale of this pack.
