In China, these dogs were considered demigods, and during the Opium Wars in the 19th century, all Pekingese dogs were killed to keep them from falling into enemy hands. Five survived and were brought to England as a gift to Queen Victoria. It is from these five dogs that all the Pekingese we have today had descended, including this adorable one!
