Megaptera novaeangliae
Description
In the late 19th century, it was believed there were over 100,000 of these whales in the oceans. Now, as a result of whaling, current estimates are around 20,000. At 39 to 45 feet long (females are larger than males), these leviathans can weigh up to 65 tons and live up to 95 years. Scientists don't really know why humpback whales breach, but it might just be for fun!
