Flamingos are a very old species of bird - over 30 million years old! They can be found on most continents in tropical and subtropical salt lakes and lagoons often in breeding colonies of over 300 birds. Flamingos can spend up to 30% of their time preening, and they have an unusual ritual of postures during mating. The kind of food they eat determines the depth of color in their feathers, and they can pump water up to 20 times per second through their bill to filter out food!
