Emperor Penguins with Egg
Aptenodytes forsteri

Description
The emperor penguin is a species of extremes! A native of Antarctica, at 3 1/2 feet tall, this is the largest species of penguin. Unlike other Penguins, the Emperor feeds on squid and may dive to depths of 700 feet, holding his breath for 18 minutes. The male incubates the egg on his feet while the female walks up to 50 miles across the ice to search for food, and then walks back several weeks later to relieve her hungry mate. They have a very distinctive call!
