Pluvialis dominica
Description
A roundtrip migration of over 20,000 miles gives this bird one of the longest migratory routes of any shorebird - from the Arctic tundra in Canada to the grasslands of South America. And they fly the 3000 miles across open ocean nonstop! In the 19th and 20th centuries there was a massive decline in their population due to hunting. Once hunting ended in 1918, their numbers began to rebound, but have never returned to pre-hunting levels as the places in South America where they spend the winter are being converted to farmland.
